Last year, 815 volunteers served more than 19,000 hours at MNHS sites across the state of Minnesota. Our volunteers provide invaluable support to the organization, often in roles where they represent MNHS to the public. The Special Events Assistant for Volunteer Services will primarily support the Special Events Volunteer Program, which operates at Twin Cities Metro Sites including the History Center Museum, Historic Fort Snelling, Mill City Museum, Oliver Kelley Farm, and the James J Hill and Ramsey Houses.

  • Experience volunteering either for a museum or in any other capacity is appreciated but not required
  • Interested in the administrative side of museums (or, more broadly, cultural institutions).  
Student Responsibilities
  • Special Events Process: prepare recruitment materials for Special Events by updating the Special Events spreadsheet, Google Calendar, and Volgistics Calendar. Write Opportunity Descriptions and Confirmation Emails for Events, based on information provided by MNHS staff.
  • Recognition: Plan and execute an event to celebrate volunteers during National Volunteer Week in April.
  • General Administrative Support: update position descriptions on the MNHS website. Assist with mailing benefit cards, recognition cards, and birthday cards. Work in the Volgistics database to pull reports, including email lists for the Volunteer Services Newsletter.
  • Attend at least four Special Events (scheduled around the intern’s availability) and get to know volunteers.
Knowledge Intern is expected to gain

Intern will gain or grow skills in database management (Volgistics), basic website maintenance, and Google Suite. They will learn how different MNHS departments and sites work together. They will also learn about project design and delivery, through Recognition Planning leading up to national Volunteer Week in April.
