About This Event

Photography & Art at the Rock, a monthly exhibit in the lobby of the Split Rock Lighthouse Visitor Center that showcases local artists, landscape and wildlife photographers of the area.

For the month of March our featured photographer is Joe Polecheck

Artist Statement:
"With eight years behind the lens and a self-taught mastery refined through experimentation and online learning, I have developed a distinct eye for the dramatic and colorful landscapes that define the Duluth/Superior region. Starting with a foundational course at First Photo in Duluth, I quickly transitioned to exploring the nuances of natural scenes, capturing the ephemeral beauty of familiar yet ever-changing vistas.

My work, characterized by a keen attention to the interplay of light and color, has earned multiple accolades, including several 'Best of the Northland' awards from the Duluth News Tribune and "Best of the Best" honors from the Duluth Reader Weekly. Beyond the acclaim, my photographs grace the walls of various local businesses, offices, and residential buildings, adding a touch of local scenery to everyday spaces.

As a devoted Nikon D850 user, wielding a Nikkor 28-70mm f2.8 Art lens, I capture the essence of the northern landscape, focusing on how light and shadow dance across the terrain. This photographic journey is driven by a passion for showcasing the uniqueness of common scenes, recognizing that the same location offers new stories through the lens, depending on the day, weather, and moment.

For me, photography is more than just capturing images; it’s about interpreting the world through a creative lens and inviting others to see the familiar in new ways. Each shot reflects my commitment to this artistic pursuit, where composition and editing come together to tell compelling stories of nature's fleeting moments."

Polecheck’s show will run from March 1 -31. Polecheck will be onsite.
